About JazzSA
JazzSA is South Australia's peak organisation for jazz and improvised music, dedicated to supporting artists, connecting communities, and celebrating the creativity of live performance. For more than 20 years, we have championed artistic excellence through performance, education, professional development, and advocacy, helping create sustainable career pathways for musicians while growing audiences and strengthening the state's vibrant jazz community.
Led by a passionate Board of musicians, educators, arts workers, and industry professionals, JazzSA brings together artistic expertise and practical leadership to support the long-term growth of jazz in South Australia. We believe jazz is a powerful artform that inspires creativity, fosters connection, and enriches communities through shared live music experiences.
From nurturing emerging talent through the acclaimed Superbands program to presenting leading Australian and international artists, JazzSA supports a diverse ecosystem of musicians, educators, venues, presenters, audiences, and partner organisations. By fostering collaboration and building meaningful partnerships across the arts, education, business, and community sectors, we help ensure jazz remains accessible, valued, and celebrated.
Guided by our values of excellence, creativity, collaboration, respect, evolution, and sustainability, we are committed to building a thriving future for jazz and improvised music. Our vision is a South Australia where artists, audiences, venues, educators, and organisations flourish together, and where jazz continues to play a vital role in the cultural life of our state for generations to come.
About the Superbands
The JazzSA Superbands are a program of three youth big bands open to South Australian musicians aged 25 years and younger. Each term the Superbands rehearse intensively and perform a full set of professional-level repertoire under the supervision of Adelaide’s leading big band directors. Rehearsals are held at the University of Adelaide (Kintore Avenue) for eight Tuesday nights (7pm to 9pm) per term. A full list of rehearsal and concert dates can be found here.
The Superbands provide young musicians who have a keen interest in big band music with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the style and repertoire beyond that of most high school ensembles, through performing a mixture of classic and contemporary big band arrangements, alongside works by local and national composers. Many participants gain a foothold in the local music scene while in the Superbands, through having the chance to interact with like-minded musicians their age, and by bringing their abilities and progress to the attention of the directors.
